DESCRIPTION:https://www.austindowntownlions.org/event-118072\n\nWeekly Luncheon & Program  \n The Blanton Museum of Art \nintroduced by Lion Mac Ragsdale \n \n\nAs the principal art museum in Austin\, and with a prominent location on the UT Campus just opposite the Bullock Texas State History Museum\,  the Blanton Museum of Art serves as the "cultural gateway" between the City of Austin\, the University of Texas\, and the State of Texas. It also houses a world class collection with a rich variety of works\, some 18\,000 in all\,  ranging from Renaissance and Baroque through modern and contemporary. Our program this Thursday will give us an historical overview and just a taste of what the Blanton has to offer....but you will have to go there to experience it for yourself.\n \nOur program will be given by Ned Rifkin\, the new Director of The Blanton Museum of Art\, his appointment commencing on May 1\, 2009. He is also a full and tenured Professor in the Department of Art and Art History and a Special Advisor to the President of the University of Texas.  Prior to this\, he was Under Secretary of Art\, Smithsonian Institution\, Washington\, DC for four and a half years\, Director\, Joseph H. Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden\, Smithsonian Institution\, Washington\, DC for four years\, Director\, The Menil Foundation and Collection\, Houston\, Texas for two years\, Director\, High Museum of Art\, Atlanta\, Georgia for 8 1/2 years.   He has served as a chief curator for the Hirshhorn Museum for five years\, Curator of Contemporary Art\, Corcoran Gallery of Art\, Washington DC\, for two years\, Curator and Associate Director\, The New Museum of Contemporary Art\, New York City\, for four years and Assistant Professor of Art\, The University of Texas at Arlington\, for three years.\n\nRifkin earned a B.A. Degree (fine arts and philosophy) at Syracuse University\,  M.A. (history of art) at the University of Michigan\, Ann Arbor\, Michigan\, and Ph. D. (history of art) also at the University of Michigan.   He has served on many boards\, including the Getty Leadership Institute\, The University of Michigan Museum of Art\, has authored numerous articles\, catalogue essays\, books\, and given scores of lectures around the world.   He has been the recipient of a number of honors and awards\, including Syracuse University’s Arendt Award\, for the most distinguished alumni.\n
