Defending the Guilty
introduced by Lion Judge Jon Wisser

In August of 2007 Paul Devoe went on a killing spree which resulted in the deaths of five people in Central Texas, including two young teenagers, and an 81 year old woman he murdered in New York as he fled Texas. His crime wave received wide-spread media coverage all over the country. He was apprehended on August 27th and a few days later returned to Austin. Upon his return, the district attorney formally charged him with Capital Murder and indicated they would seek the death penalty. From the very select list of attorneys who the judges have selected to try death penalty cases, Jim Erickson and Tom Weber were assigned the task of defending Mr. Devoe.

Jim Erickson will share with us his experience with this case, from the day he was appointed until the jury returned a verdict which resulted in Paul Devoe being sent to death row. He will explain, despite overwhelming evidence, including the defendant's multiple confessions, why the defendant had a jury trial and why his attorneys were required to vigorously defend him. You will hear about aspects of death penalty cases that are not reported in the media. Bring your questions.
