photo of Lion Gus GarciaLion Gus Garcia, former mayor of Austin, has been "lionized" with a school named after him--The Gus Garcia Young Men's Leadership Academy--that is already achieving distinction in only its first year of operation.

The vision statement for this one-of-a-kind school in AISD reads: "In an environment of brotherhood, the Gus Garcia Young Men’s Leadership Academy will develop scholars who are empathetic, service-oriented, problem solvers, and life-long learners who are successful in high school, college, career, and life." Through rigorous curriculum and pre-AP course offerings aligned with Early College High School programs, Garcia YMLA gives students the opportunity to graduate from high school with up to 60 college credit hours, enough to earn an Associate’s degree and save up to $20,000 in tuition costs.

The ADFLC presented a check for $3000 to the YMLA library in September for purchasing additional books that promote the reading interests of students in this unique school population.

photo of Devin GarciaChoir Director Devin Guerrero is from San Antonio and earned a full scholarship to NTSU in music, where he graduated in 2012 with a double major in music theory and music education/strings. He plays the double bass, spent 6 months studying German in Germany, and also coaches soccer at the school. At Garcia, he teaches both choir and orchestra, and the Garcia Troubadours is membered by 11 students from all three grades--6,7,8. Since the choir has only been formed since the beginning of this school year, this is their first opportunity to perform a light program of secular tunes and a few holiday numbers. The students are eager to answer questions about their new school and their many interests.
