Community Action Network: Working to Make Austin/Travis County a Better Place to Live

CAN is a partnership of governmental, non-profit, private and faith-based organizations which leverage mutual resources to collectively improve social, health, educational and economic opportunities in our community. The CAN Board and CAN Community Council are made up of policy makers and citizens who come together to carry out its vision to ensure that Austin/Travis County citizens are safe, healthy, educated, and employed. Raul Alvarez, CAN’s Executive Director, will present some of the highlights of the CAN Dashboard and practical ideas of action that can help to make Austin/Travis County a better place to live and work. Lion Ann Teich will introduce Mr. Alvarez.

Prior to serving as the Executive Director of the Community Action Network, Mr. Alvarez served as an Austin City Council member from 2000-2006 and on the Austin Community College Board of Trustees from 2008 – 2010, He has also served on the Board of Capital Metro, the Electric Utility Commission, and the Govalle/Johnston Neighborhood Planning Team. Mr. Alvarez is the board president of the East Austin Conservancy and a founding member of Futuro Fund Austin.

Mr. Alvarez has also worked for the Austin Independent School District as a Grassroots Community Coordinator for the Office of Redesign and since 2010 worked as an Administrative Supervisor for the Office of Teaching and Learning. He also served as AISD staff lead on community collaborations such as My Brother's Keeper, Hispanic Futures, Missing School Matters, the Texas Education Consortium for Male Students of Color, and the Eliminating Crime & Violence Community Collaboration.

Mr. Alvarez holds a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering from Stanford University and a Master of Science in Community and Regional Planning from the University of Texas at Austin.
