Austin Speech Labs is a 501(c)(3) organization that provides intensive speech and cognitive therapy for stroke survivors. They opened their doors in 2008 and have been growing ever since. They will be speaking about the need for organizations like Austin Speech Labs. They will also tell us about the concept for their boot camp programs and the latest research studies they are facilitating.

Shilpa Shamapant, M.S., M.A., CCC-SLP - President, Co-founder

Shilpa is the Executive Director, and Afternoon Clinical Director at Austin Speech Labs. She started Austin Speech Labs in 2008 out of frustration of discharging clients due to lack of insurance or progress being plateaued. She has double masters in computer engineering and speech language pathology. Shilpa has over twenty years of work experience as a professional. The first twelve years of her professional experience was in the field of engineering and now she is a speech therapist helping stroke survivors regain their language skills. Shilpa developed unique treatment protocols and home exercises for clients, caregivers to facilitate communication. She manages the office in the morning, trains and supervises intern while providing therapy in the afternoon.

Shilpa conducts and collaborates research with various centers and believes in neuroplasticity and that recovery never stops. She has published articles in Brain and Language, and Aphasia journals as a co-author while at the University of Texas, Austin. Her research interests are in language disorders related to aphasia, auditory processing and focuses on developing efficient treatment to improve speech, language and cognitive skills for stroke survivors.

Shelley Adair, M.S., CCC-SLP - Co-founder, Morning Clinical Director

Shelley is the morning clinical director at Austin Speech Labs. She has worked in the field of speech pathology for twenty four years. She has a diverse background working in schools, long-term acute care, outpatient rehabilitation, inpatient rehabilitation, acute care, home health, private practice and nursing home settings. She has been involved in several research studies and has helped develop treatment protocols for multiple organizations. She has developed training programs for caregivers and medical providers alike. She has spent much of her career training and supervising interns. She has assisted with the development and implementation of telepractice, and intensive therapy programs for stroke recovery.
