Commercial Construction Update and Industry Challenges

Introduced by Lion John Nyfeler

Phil Thoden

Anyone looking over the Austin skyline or driving around town these days can plainly see that the local construction industry is extremely busy. Phil Thoden, President of the Austin Chapter of the Associated General Contractors of America (Austin AGC), will provide an update on this local commercial construction activity and also share some of the challenges facing the building industry, such as workforce development. He won’t be able to give you an estimate or schedule for your upcoming kitchen or bathroom remodel, but he will be happy to answer questions you may have about the local commercial construction industry!

About our speaker:
Phil Thoden currently serves as the President and CEO of the Austin Chapter of the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC), a trade association of over 250 leading general contractors, specialty contractors and suppliers working in the Central Texas commercial building industry. These companies, large and small, employ roughly 10,000 people in the local economy and build a wide range of projects such as office and residential towers downtown, hospitals, schools, retail spaces and just about anything that is not highway or residential work.

Key services provided by the Austin AGC are safety, advocacy, networking, education and building information. Our members have been engaged community partners here since 1946 and our office space has been located near the intersection of South Lamar and Barton Springs since 1971. We are proud to help build Austin’s quality of life!

Before coming to Austin in 2003, Mr. Thoden spent 18 years in Washington, DC. He worked for 9 years as a lobbyist, including 5 years for the AGC of America. He also spent 4 years on the staff of a U.S. Senator.

Phil graduated with a Bachelor of Science undergraduate degree from Georgetown University in Washington, DC, in 1989. The son of an Air Force officer, Phil has lived in many locations throughout the United States as well as Japan and France.

A father of 3 children (17, 14 and 11), Phil and his wife Holly lead an active home life in Austin. In his spare time, Phil enjoys swimming, cycling, and devouring books and movies. He is also an active member of the Austin Rotary Club.
