The Future of Eye Care, Research & Education in Austin

 Dr. Mitchel Wong
Introduced by Lion Sam Ruiz

Austin native Mitchel Wong graduated with honors from the University of Texas at Austin. He received his doctor of medicine from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. He completed a surgical internship at Ben Taub Hospital, followed by a fellowship in ophthalmic pathology and residency in ophthalmology at Baylor College of Medicine.

In 1969 he founded Austin Eye, one of the first local practices to provide small incision cataract surgery, intraocular lens technology and topical anesthesia cataract surgery. In 2012, he was instrumental in bringing laser cataract surgery to Austin.

In 2016 the Wong family contributed more than $20 million to create the Mitchel and Shannon Wong Eye Institute at the Dell Medical School in Austin, a leading-edge center to train future ophthalmologists and provide patients with the best medical and surgical eye care possible.

Dr. Wong is married to Rose and they have four sons: Michael, Shawn, Patrick and Shannon.
