Longhorns & Lions in Europe

Reflections on the U.T. Longhorn Alumni Band visit to Normandy, France and Lions at LCI Convention in Milan, Italy

August 8, 2019

 Dr. Scott Hanna
Director, Longhorn Band, Butler School of Music
The University of Texas at Austin

Introduced by Lion Scott Hendrix

This past June, on the 75th anniversary of the Allied Landings of D-Day, the U.T. Longhorn Alumni Band had the honor of representing the University, Texas, and the U.S. in ceremonial performances on the coast of France and in Paris. Leading these over 250 musicians (a handful of whom are active in our Austin Founder Lions Club) was Dr. Scott Hanna, Director of the U.T. Longhorn Band. Under Dr. Hanna’s direction the Alumni Band entertained thousands at events both somber and triumphant that included world leaders and a large contingent of distinguished D-Day veterans from the U.S., Great Britain, Canada, France and other former WWII allies.

Dr. Scott S. Hanna serves as Associate Director of Bands at The University of Texas at Austin, Music Director and Conductor of the Wind Symphony, and Director of the Longhorn Band. A member of the Butler School of Music faculty since 1999, he teaches courses in conducting and chamber music, and was from 2003 to 2008 Associate Director of the Butler School of Music. Prior to his appointment at The University of Texas, Dr. Hanna taught in the public schools of New Braunfels and Austin, Texas. Dr. Hanna is one of ten faculty, staff and administration members at The University of Texas to receive the 2003 Eyes of Texas Excellence Award for outstanding contributions to student life. His professional memberships include the College Band Directors National Association, Texas Music Educators Association, Texas Bandmasters Association, Phi Beta Mu, Phi Kappa Phi, and Pi Kappa Lambda.

We will also hear from our own members who participated in this event in France, and from our Lion delegates just returned from the 2019 Lions International Convention in Milan, Italy.
