Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Presentation
Introduction by
Lion President Jacqueline Hammett

Using the national average of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) prevalence (1 in 100), and the 2008 census data, Texas has approximately 4,055 children a year born with completely preventable, irreversible brain damage.

This week's speaker, Sheryl Draker, will be addressing the leading cause of mental retardation and learning disabilities in the nation- fetal alcohol spectrum disorders. When children are exposed to alcohol in the womb, it damages the heart, kidneys, growth, teeth, facial features, and most importantly, the brain.

Herself the adoptive parent of a child with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and a member of the Texas FASD Leadership and Planning Collaborative, Sheryl will present on the devastating effects of alcohol on the developing brain, what can be done to improve the lives of the children already living with an FASD in Texas, and what can be done to help put a stop to this totally preventable, life long birth defect.
