Texas Youth Hunting Program
Doug DuBois

introduction by Lion James Overton

THYP

The Texas Wildlife Association (TWA) and the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) have joined forces to offer youth hunts that are safe, educational and very affordable. We sponsor introductory, instructive youth hunts for deer, turkey, hogs, javelina, exotics, dove, small game, waterfowl, varmints and other species.

Doug DuBoisSpeakers Bio: Doug DuBois, Jr. is the Area Coordinator for the Heart of Texas (Area 9) of the Texas Youth Hunting Program (TYHP).

In this role Doug coordinates other volunteers in an eleven-county area to man youth hunts, recruit landowners and provide outreach to youth and civic organizations. In addition to being a certified Huntmaster with the Texas Youth Hunting Program, Doug is also an Hunter Education Instructor, certified by the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department.

Additionally, he has been involved with the program since 2001 and currently serves as Chairman of the TYHP Advisory Committee within the Texas Wildlife Association. The Texas Wildlife Association (TWA) and the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) have joined forces to offer youth hunts that are safe, educational and very affordable. TYHP sponsors introductory, instructive youth hunts for deer, turkey, hogs, javelina, exotics, dove, small game, waterfowl, varmints and other species. Normally, TYHP provides mentors, lodging and meals on a very affordable basis, seeking a donation of $110 per youth/adult pair to help cover the costs.

Throughout the weekend of hunting activity, the program reinforces the principles of hunter education, safety and having fun. Youth are accompanied by a parent or adult guardian and are involved in all aspects of the hunt, including field dressing, skinning and quartering their quarry. Landowners benefit from the program as TYHP is used as a wildlife management tool to assist with population control and harvest goals established by the landowner, many times with the valuable assistance of a TPWD wildlife biologist.
