Preserving Dark Skies
Astronomy in the National Parks

introduction by Lion Larry Najvar

Rapidly growing light pollution over the last few decades is threatening our view of the night skies.
In addition to harming our most direct and awe inspiring connection with the universe, serious light pollution also has negative effects in other areas such as human health, in the animal world, and by wasting significant energy and financial resources.
Concerns that many people have about degrading security as a result of changes that reduce light pollution can be largely mitigated by good design in improved night time lighting.
The National Parks are among the leaders in their efforts to preserve dark skies and educate the public.
