Annual AISD Sportmanship Awards

Come join us for a celebration and recognition of youth athletics at our annual Sportsmanship Award presentation. The stars of the day will be the youth athletes who will be recognized with a scholarship award for their excellence.

After the awards presentation we are delighted to receive Bill Zapalac.

The Austin Downtown Founder Lions Club have been celebrating sportsmanship in our young athletes for over 50 years. Come join us to see who this year’s winners are at this annual event along with the student athletes, coaches, and other AISD officials.

Born in Bellvile, Texas, Willie Frank Zapalac, Jr. is a former football linebacker/defensive end in the National Football League.

Zapalac attended the Universty of Texas and played college football for the Longhorns. Zapalac was 3 time academic all conference and twice was named Academic All American. In 1970 he was named to the National Football Foundation Academic All American team. He graduated from the school of Architectural Engineering In 2011 he was inducted in the University of Texas Hall of Honor.

Zapalac was a 4th round selection (84th overall pick) in the 1971 NFL Draft by the New York Jets. He played for three years with the Jets (1971–1973).

Since retiring from football, Bill has worked in the construction industry. He is currently president of Zapalac/Reed Construction in Austin, Texas.
