Colonel William James “Greg” Gregory, USAF retired, was born in 1920 in Smith County, Tennessee. He joined the US Army Air Corps in in 1941, just 3 months before the start of WW II. Gregory began combat flying the P-38 Lightening in North Africa, and is also a combat veteran of both the Korean and Vietnam wars. His military career spanned over 30 years over the most significant chapters in the development of aircraft. An important chapter of Col. Gregory’s career included serving as a U-2 pilot during the Cuban Missile Crises, providing the first photographs identifying the SAM missiles and Soviet buildup in Cuba. During his assignment to the Pentagon from 1967-71, Col. Gregory was involved in research and development of the first drone concepts. He holds the rare distinction of being awarded four Legions of Merit during his career with the USAF. One of these was for his secret service during the Cuban Missile Crises, which was awarded in a secure ceremony with a personal letter of Commendation from President John F. Kennedy. It was held for him at CIA headquarters until his involvement was de-classified in 1975.
At 98 years old Col. Gregory may not be as vibrant as when he was a fighter pilot or flying U-2s during the cold war, but he nevertheless has thrilling stories to tell and experiences to share. This is a unique opportunity for us to hear from one of the last of his generation! He has recently published a book about his life which will be available at the program.
