Rep. Celia Israel has created a successful small business and served the Austin community for decades as a volunteer and an elected official. Rep. Israel is going to share her vision for a successful path to service in Austin.
About our Speaker:
A native Texan, Representative Celia Israel moved to Austin in the summer of 1982 at 17 years old to attend the University of Texas at Austin. The City of Austin took her in with open arms and an energy and a community that has inspired her decades of public service.
Rep. Israel first served in the Ann Richards administration, where she learned how to lead with heart and a good sense of humor. Rep. Israel has served our community on numerous nonprofit boards centered on issues of equity and has served the City of Austin on the Environmental Board, the Police Monitor Board, the 2011 Bond Advisory Commission, and the Robert Mueller Advisory Commission.
She has served four terms in the Texas House of Representatives for House District 50 in Northern Travis County. During her time in the legislature, Rep. Israel has been a known champion for voting rights, transportation safety, and the LGBTQIA+ community. She is a founding member of the Texas House LGBTQ Caucus.
Rep. Israel was named "Freshman of the Year" in her first term in the legislature, and since then, she has been honored by organizations including the Human Rights Campaign, Progress Texas, Texas Democratic Women, and the Capital Area Progressive Democrats. Rep. Israel was inducted into the Austin Women's Hall of Fame in 2018.
