 Tolga Ozyurtcu, Ph.D.
Introduced by Lion Mac Ragsdale

When it comes to college football, it is - as they say -,  the same ‘ol song. Today’s headlines tell us about a sport a risk, whether from traumatic brain injuries or the above-board infusion of money from athletes being granted Name-Image-Likeness rights. But if we look back at the history of the game, we’d see the same headlines and concerns: a sport that is too violent, that commands big bucks and distracts from the educational mission of the university. This brief talk will consider the future of Longhorn and College football, in part by looking back at the 1910 Longhorn football season and turn of the century football. The 1910 ‘Horns had a student manager named Lutcher Stark, who would go on to chair the UT Board of Regents, and change the very nature of college sports along the way. Today, Stark’s name graces the H.J. Lutcher Stark Center for Physical Culture and Sports, where interested folks can join us after the talk for a museum visit and tour.
